Facing tougher competition by switching to the Colorado State League from the Western Slope League caused the Glenwood Ice U12 girls to lose their first league game in five seasons on Saturday.

The 4-3 defeat came at the hands of COPA North, whose players reside in the Longmont-Boulder area.

Michaela Mansfield scored two goals. Holly Brown added the Ice’s third goal during the second half. The Ice resume play Saturday at Gates Soccer Field against the Skyline Elite Blue.

The Glenwood Red won their respective division championship at an invitational eight-team tournament at Gates Soccer Park on Oct. 1-2.

Glenwood, behind leading scorer Sebastian Key, defeated the Basalt Rocks, Carbondale Blue and Thunder Mountain Green to advance to the championship match with the Glenwood Blue.

The Red completed its undefeated run with a 4-2 victory over their local rivals. Key had eight goals in tournament play. Four Glenwood players had two scores each.
