Zach Schwartz Memorial hoops tournament set for June 28

The eighth-annual Zach Schwartz Memorial 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled for June 28 at Riverside Middle School in New Castle.

Event-day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on June 28, but preregistration will also be accepted. All ages are welcome, and four-player teams are encouraged. Cost is $20 per player, and prizes will be awarded for first- and second-place teams. Team spirit awards will also be given out.

The tournament raises funds primarily for college and camp scholarships for area youth in memory of Schwartz, a Coal Ridge High School student killed in a car accident in 2006.

Zach, according to his mother, Deriree Carpenter, had many friends and a great family who he always encouraged by saying, “You’re Amazing.” The quote has become the tournament slogan through the years.

The fund has given scholarships for college, trade schools and sports camps each year since the first fundraiser in 2007. Scholarship applications are available to seniors throughout Garfield County. This year, a scholarship was awarded to Sarah Scott of Coal Ridge High School.
