Zilm swings to Western Slope Open title

Sarai Zilm has never thought of herself as a great tennis player, but she undeniably played like one this past week.

On Friday, she was rewarded for stepping up her game.

In knocking off Texan Claire Dorfman 6-3, 6-4 in the Girls 14 Singles final at the Taco Bell Western Slope Open in Grand Junction, the Glenwood Springs High School freshman-to-be put the finishing touch on a dream week.

Four days, four matches and four wins carried Zilm to an age-division title, and she lost just one of nine sets along the way.

All this from a girl who considers herself just an OK player.

“I’ve been an OK player,” she said. “I’ve never been the greatest on the court, but I’ve been a pretty good player.”

Zilm credited time spent polishing her game this summer, and a coaching tip or two from her mom, GSHS girls tennis coach Phyllis Zilm, with fueling the win.

“I’ve been working all summer with cheerleading and tennis and I’ve improved my game a little,” Sarai said. “My mom’s been a really good coach. … She wasn’t with me the whole time, but she wrote down on little sticky notes things like move your feet, be positive. I always heard her voice in my head.”
