Name: Blaine PetersAge: 46Occupation: Rock maker and sculptorResidence: Silt MesaHow long have you lived in the area? 7 yearsWhere did you move from? I grew up in Los Angeles and moved here (Colorado) 10 years ago. What is the sculpture called? Silt in a Roundabout WayWhat is the sculpture of? What it is, is a rock sculpture that depicts events and things around Silt. Things around and about Silt like the wildlife, the town’s history. All these things are carved into a big rock and it depicts, Silt being the center of all these attractions. What is it made out of? It’s all man made, out of steel, Styrofoam and cement. The blocks of foam are 12-foot-high, 4-foot-wide and two-foot-thick. They’re attached to a big steel superstructure and it’s hollow on the inside. How did you come up with the idea for the sculpture? It kind of originated out of something I saw while living in South Africa. I lived there for two years and I saw something that someone did where they plastered something on a real rock out cropping. I took it from there and created my own rock cropping and created art out of it.Does it represent the town of Silt?Totally. Not only Silt, but the surrounding area as well. That is where the around about comes into play. What was the most challenging aspect of this project for you?Kind of breaking new ground and doing things I’ve not done before. The biggest challenge was building it at my house and making it transportable. I engineered and designed it myself, and it worked tremendously. It is one big piece. It was massive. How long did it take for you to complete the piece?About one month and about 400 man hours in it. My brother-in-law ended up working on it for 10 days on the sub-structure. And another friend of mine came to visit and I put him to work on it, too. People are going to rethink coming to my house to visit. Why did you want to do this piece?I just thought that it totally represented the area. To design something that fits the area and it’s my trait to do rocks. So, I thought I could show people what I could do. I do mostly residential work and it’s not open to the public as much.Have you done sculptures, or projects like this before?Nothing of this magnitude. I’ve been doing this work for 26 years, but I just keep trying to better myself and expand myself. I’ve done some really wild stuff here in Colorado. What is the most interesting place you’ve done work?I’ve worked in Israel, Turkey, Paris. I’ve worked in almost 19 countries. Plus, I’ve done quite a bit of work in the states as well at Disney World and Disney Land. What does it mean for you to have your sculpture at the entrance of the town of Silt? It’s a big deal for me because now the public can see my work on the big basis. Not only residents, but tourists, too. It’s exciting. I kind of feel that I’ve gone somewhere. I’ve been doing this a long time, but this is huge. It’s a really cool piece. I’m anxious for people to see it.
