Bring Strawberry Days back to Strawberry Park

In regard to Ken Murphy’s letter on Wednesday, June 25 (“Reclaim our heritage and reconnect Glenwood to its roots”), I actually wrote a letter to the editor in 2022 requesting that the Strawberry Days fair be moved back to Sayre (Strawberry) Park, where it had been held for many decades.

I wrote for different reasons: inaccessibility for the majority of the people and unsafe night accessibility. The following year, they added numerous shuttles, resulting in excessive carbon burning.

I again implore Glenwood to please move Strawberry Days back to its historic location, where it is easily accessible via RFTA.

Supermarket shuffle: Where’s AI when you need it?

The supermarket business in Glenwood has undergone significant changes over the past few decades. Safeway, City Market, Big Red next to the West Glenwood Mall, and a couple of other markets had so much square footage that everyone in town would have over 10 square feet to occupy in these five stores.

A tribute to Bill Moyers

Bill Moyers died in hospital on June 26, 2025. He was, truly, a great man. He was a giant in journalism, broadcasting, and politics. One of his signature endeavors was to bring the great professor Joseph Campbell to the world through television programs. He enlightened more than one generation.

Moyers was for decades the epitome of “public broadcasting,” which is now under attack by the current president. I found the work of Bill Moyers inspiring. I hope you might look him up online.

Look beyond the assumptions

I get upset anytime a foreigner assumes that just because I’m an American, I support the current president’s policies. Even a lot of the people who voted for him don’t support some of the things he’s doing.

Along the same lines, just because someone is Israeli or Jewish doesn’t mean they support the genocide going on in Palestine. And just because someone is Palestinian doesn’t mean they support Hamas’ attack on Israel. Just because someone is Hispanic doesn’t mean they’re an undocumented gang member.

If you get to know someone before you make assumptions, maybe you’ll find you have more in common than you thought.

Where are the flags?

When the “new” Grand Avenue Bridge was completed in 2017, the Glenwood Springs Rotary donated $5,000 to place flags along the bridge. The brackets for those flags were already in place. Almost eight years later, almost the Fourth of July again, and no flags in sight.

Did City Council decide that Glenwood Springs does not need to fly the flags? Or did some GWS bureaucrat make that decision? A poor decision in my humble opinion.

Please put United States and Colorado flags up on the Grand Avenue Bridge for the Fourth of July. Also, for some unknown reason, all flags were removed from Garfield County buildings before Memorial Day. Once again, almost Fourth of July — no flags! Please have all flags returned to Garfield County buildings by July 4, 2025.

Thank you.
