History in Focus: Glenwood Canyon construction

Between 1936 and August 1, 1938, crews worked continuously to widen and improve Highway 40 through Glenwood Canyon. Thanks to Senator Edward T. Taylor (of Glenwood Springs), $1.5 million dollars were set aside for just this project out of a larger federal highway improvement grant. Following completion, Highway 40 then became Highway 6&24. During construction, traffic was routed over the original stage road of Cottonwood Pass. Though not specifically identified, the workers in the photo were most likely members of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). H.L. Jenness was construction engineer and L.L. Finley engineer in charge of design. A buffalo barbeque was held for its grand opening on August 1, 1938.
