Glenwood Springs Historical Society archive: Shoshone Power Plant in Glenwood Canyon
The Shoshone Hydroelectric Power Plant sits along the north side of the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon, about 2.5 miles west of Shoshone Dam. Residential buildings that once surrounded the plant were later removed during construction of Interstate 70. Two penstocks, visible on the canyon wall above the plant, carry water diverted through a tunnel from Shoshone Dam to turbines inside the plant. Construction began in 1906, and the plant began operating June 6, 1909.
The nonprofit Glenwood Springs Historical Society, founded 1964, preserves and shares the town’s unique history at the Frontier History Museum and provides additional public programs. Information about the museum events, and membership are at GlenwoodHistory.org.
