Brush fire in West Glenwood leads to short-term evacuation prep, quickly contained

Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon to a small brush fire in the West Glenwood area that briefly shut down Donegan Road and prompted residents of Sunny Acres to prepare for possible evacuations.

The fire was first reported at 3:24 p.m. as a possible structure fire, but initial crews quickly determined it was a small brush fire, according to Glenwood Springs Fire Department Emergency Coordinator Mina Bolton.

“We were dispatched for what came across as a structure fire,” Bolton said. “However, the first responders’ initial size-up was of a small brush fire.”

The fire was declared contained by 3:53 p.m., but firefighters from Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and Colorado River Fire Rescue remained on scene to mop up hot spots.

Mutual aid crews from neighboring agencies helped both with firefighting operations and providing coverage for the rest of the town, Bolton said.

Donegan Road was closed between Vista Drive and Sunny Acres Road to allow fire crews access to the scene. The road has since reopened.

Sunny Acres residents were advised to stay prepared in case evacuation orders became necessary. Authorities encouraged the public to check their Garfield County emergency alert settings at GarCo911.com for timely updates.

A red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, meaning critical fire conditions are in effect with strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures that can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
