Garfield Re-2 School District delays start of school year due to wildfires and air quality concerns

The Garfield Re-2 School District announced Sunday night that the start of the 2025-26 school year will be delayed as a precautionary measure due to the Elk and Lee fires, according to a school district news release.
Impacts from the fires have disrupted communications at several schools and contributed to poor air quality, resulting in staffing shortages that prevent the district from safely opening.
There will be no school on Monday, Aug. 11, or Tuesday, Aug. 12. The district is working to restore communications, ensure adequate staffing, and monitor conditions closely. If conditions allow, schools will open on Wednesday, Aug. 13. An update will be provided to families no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday to confirm reopening plans.
All athletic practices scheduled for Monday and Tuesday are also canceled.
“We understand this is an anxious time for many families,” the school district said in the release. “If your household is directly impacted by the Elk RBX or Lee fires, please take the time you need to care for your loved ones and your safety. We look forward to welcoming your children back as soon as conditions allow.”
The district expressed gratitude to local, state, and federal emergency responders and firefighters “working tirelessly to protect our communities.”
Families with questions are encouraged to contact the Garfield Re-2 District Office at 970-665-7600.
