Glenwood Springs Historical Society archive: Camp school in Cardiff

This photo shows the one-room school located at Cardiff circa 1922. “Camp” schools like this one usually ended at eighth grade. For those students wanting to pursue their education, they had to travel into nearby towns like Glenwood Springs or Carbondale where they would often board with local town residents since it was too far to travel on a daily basis. Children from nearby farms on Four Mile would ride horseback to Cardiff to attend school with the miners’ children. After eighth grade, many of these children didn’t pursue furthering their education. Boys left school to work and help support families and girls learned domestic chores to assist their mothers.
