The Glenwood Springs Historical Society’s free public speaker series will continue Thursday, Oct. 9, with a presentation by author and researcher Eilene Lyon on pioneer cemeteries.
Lyon will discuss the source materials and stories she uncovered while researching her second book, “What Lies Beneath Colorado: Pioneer Graveyards and Cemeteries.” The talk will also explore “hidden personal trials and triumphs discovered in Colorado’s oldest cemeteries,” according to a Wednesday news release from the historical society.
The free presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Glenwood Springs Public Library.
Lyon, a longtime researcher from Durango, released her first book, “Fortune’s Frenzy: A California Gold Rush Odyssey,” in 2023. The book revealed little-known aspects of the gold rush and earned a Will Rogers Bronze Medallion as well as recognition as a Spur Awards finalist.
When she isn’t researching or writing, Lyon enjoys exploring the San Juan Mountains for plants, animals and history, and she shares her findings on her blog, Myricopia.
The speaker series is presented by the Glenwood Springs Historical Society in partnership with Garfield County Public Libraries and with support from the city of Glenwood Springs.
Upcoming speakers include cave guide Khloe Everett, who will present on the history of caves and caving in Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 8.
