History in Focus: Swim class

This young class of swimmers were waiting for their Red Cross swim class to begin. The photo was taken circa 1941 on the lawn in front of the Hot Springs Pool Stone Bath House. This was during a time when the pool was only open to sailors and soldiers, as well as the Red Cross swimming classes. Otherwise, the pool and vapor caves were both closed to civilians because of the Naval Hospital at the Hotel Colorado. Their instructor was Capt. Eugene Guild of Glenwood Springs. It is said that at one point during his endeavors, the Captain stated that, "I've vaccinated 300 children from/against drowning."
