Man arrested after attempting to steal police car in Rifle

A man was arrested early Tuesday morning after attempting to steal a Rifle Police Department vehicle.

A news release from the Rifle Police Department today stated that this morning at approximately 12:50 a.m., a Rifle police officer arrived at the police department and saw headlights in the department’s parking lot. An officer contacted the adult male before he was able to leave the department’s parking lot.

Manuel Alberto Cabrera was then taken into custody without incident, the release states.



The driver was taken into custody without incident. Investigation showed that the suspect had broken a window to get into the police department, where he stole a radio and keys to a patrol vehicle. He didn’t leave the secured parking lot during the incident, the release stated. 

The release stated that the driver was transferred to the Garfield County Jail and was booked for the following charges:  



  • Motor Vehicle Theft in the 2nd Degree (F4)
  • Second-Degree Burglary of a Building (F5)
  • Theft from a Building (F6)
  • Criminal Mischief (F6)
  • Possession of Burglary Tools (M2)
  • Second-Degree Criminal Trespass of a Vehicle (M2)
  • Second-Degree Criminal Trespass of a Fenced Area (PO)
