New event series beginning at Garfield County library this summer

With school over, the Garfield County Libraries are putting on some summer series for kids to enjoy reading, getting energy out and having some fun in the sun.
These summer series begin with Summer Fun at the Silt library at 2 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. Mondays are for playing with LEGO, Tuesdays are arts and crafts, Wednesdays are for the Summer Reading performers and on Thursdays they’ll be showing movies. This series will be running from June 2 to Aug. 8. It’s for all kids and to call the Silt library at 970-876-5500 for more information.
To add to the summer fun, the normal Get Your Wiggles Out series for toddlers and preschoolers at the Glenwood Springs library will include water this summer. These events will be at 11 a.m. on Thursdays through June and July to be both inside and outside, so be prepared to get messy. For more information, call the Glenwood Springs library at 970-945-5958.
The Glenwood Springs library is also holding special pop-up storytimes with Mx. Red, named Read with Red. Red will be at various parks in Glenwood Springs at 10 a.m. each Friday in June and July. Come read, sing, play and snack.
A new writing series is beginning at the Glenwood Springs branch library for people who love to write. Join the group at 3-5 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month to connect with your writer muses, engage in storytelling and writing prompts that ignite the imagination, learn new craft strategies and styles and be inspired by each other. This series will be led by Jessica Amber Barnum to celebrate the connection in the wilderness of words. Bring a notebook, pen, or your curious heart, water and snacks if you want. This series will run from June to December.
The Parachute library is also holding three storytime series at Cottonwood Park in Parachute. Every Wednesday from June 4 to Aug. 6 will have a Nature’s Nook story time featuring songs and story in the park. Another series, called Park Tales, will be held on Fridays: June 13, July 11 and Aug. 1, and will feature a storytime for elementary school aged children as part of Summer Reading, which will include a story, craft and ice pops. The third series will be in Spanish, called Historias Bajo el Árbol, which will be on Mondays from June 9 to Aug. 4. All events will begin at 9:30 a.m. For more information, call the Parachute library at 970-285-9870.
Parachute’s branch library is also looking for teens who want to work alongside their librarians and engage with their community by brainstorming ideas for programs and resources they’d like to see at their library. Meetings will be at 4 p.m. on the first Friday of each month at the library and snacks will be provided.
The Rifle Branch library will be holding a fun-filled, educational family event all about Colorado’s wild horses. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, discover the beauty and importance of the Piceance Range herd, located between Rifle and Meeker, through an engaging presentation filled by a Q & A session. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, participants will meet at the library to head out on a local field trip to see the wild horses in their natural habitat.
The New Castle Library is having an event to focus on the fundamental techniques of paper quilling, including rolling, shaping and gluing paper strips. Create shapes and designs, like coils, teardrops and curves before moving onto more complex projects. This bilingual event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 and is free to all adults but registration is required. To register or for more information, call the New Castle library at 970-984-2346.
It’s time to grab your copy of “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, go to the bar and discuss the meaning of the green light with your local librarians. Meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 at the Beer Works in Carbondale. Small appetizers will be provided by the library, all other food and drinks are the responsibility of the attendees. Copies of “The Great Gatsby” are available at checkout and for more information, call the Carbondale library at 970-963-2889.
This summer’s reading series, Hiking Club: The Game, is in accordance with the Garfield County libraries’ theme: hiking. Adults can join staff from the libraries on any of the four hikes from June to September or hike at least 20 miles at their leisure. The first hike will be on June 14 at the Rifle Falls State Park trails near Rifle. July 12’s hike will be at the Red Hill Recreation Area in Carbondale. The third hike takes place on Aug. 9 at the Colorow Trail in New Castle and the final trail will be on Sep. 13 at the Jeanne Golay Trail in Glenwood Springs. As you progress, level up and collect different buttons on your way to summit a peak near you. Pick up a gameboard from your local library. Registration is encouraged and each hike will be at 8 a.m. There is more information online at gcpld.org and this series is for adults.
Unfortunately, the Carbondale branch library is cancelling the “Poets & Writers Group” program that was for the third Sunday of each month.
