January 27, 1959 – July 15, 2025
After a courageous seven year battle with cancer, Maureen “Mo” Walters peacefully passed away on Tuesday July 15th, 2025 at her home in New Castle surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband Dennis, two sons Dylan and Drew, daughter-in-law Libby, and granddaughter Maria.
Mo was born in Mundelein, Illinois on January 27th, 1959 to William “Pat” and Lois Golden. She was the youngest of five children, Mary, Pat, Tim and Kathy. She grew up on Diamond Lake and spent much of her youth on the water with her sister Kathy. Mo was a competitive water ski jumper, winning several tournaments and fulfilling her adventurous spirit. She attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where she met her future husband, Dennis, to whom she was married for 44 years. They married in 1981 and shortly thereafter, moved to Colorado where three of her siblings had relocated. After living for a time in Telluride and Grand Junction, Mo, Dennis and the boys settled in Glenwood Springs in 1993. It was here, where Mo would go on to have a career in education, teaching students at Basalt and Sopris elementary schools.
Mo will be remembered for her seemingly endless energy, infectious laugh, and immeasurable generosity. She loved spending time with her family and many friends, as well as her dog Molly and beloved cat Tito. In the winters, she loved to snowboard and snowshoe. In the summers she would raft and tube on the river, ride her bike along the Rio Grande trail, and hike Mushroom Rock in the early mornings. Her favorite vacation spots were Moab and Hawaii. Mo touched many lives through her teaching. One of her proudest accomplishments was a memorial book she made for the firefighters who died during the Storm King Fire. The books are still used in the local elementary schools to teach young students about the tragedy.
Maureen will be dearly missed, but her memory will live on through those that knew her. A celebration of life has been scheduled for Saturday, July 26th from 2 – 4 pm at the Lakota Rec Center, 151 Clubhouse Dr., New Castle, CO 81647. Maureen wanted this to be a celebration and in her always joyous spirit, encourages folks to wear bright colors.
Her family would like to thank all the medical care team, family, and friends who helped throughout this cancer battle – it was a true team effort. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Maureen to the Melanoma Research Foundation at melanoma.org or the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.
