A Glenwood Springs police response prompted a shelter-in-place alert in part of downtown Thursday evening after officers responded to a residence for a medical assist and report of a potential threat.

The Glenwood Springs Police Department responded at about 6:08 p.m. Thursday, according to a Facebook post from the department. Officers attempted to contact people inside the residence several times before entering, with assistance from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Special Problems Enforcement and Response, Colorado State Patrol and the Glenwood Springs Fire Department.

Once inside, officers found a man experiencing a mental health crisis. The man was taken to receive mental health assistance, and the original reporting party was treated for medical conditions, according to the department.

The response prompted an alert through Everbridge, a mass notification system used by emergency agencies to send public safety alerts. The alert said there was a law enforcement presence in the area and instructed residents to “stay inside, lock doors and windows, and avoid the area”.

The area was cleared at 7:21 p.m., and police said there was no ongoing threat. No further details have been released.
