Roaring Fork School District Board of Education election sees two applications filed

The Roaring Fork School District has received its first applications for two open board seats that will be decided in the November election.

The four-year terms for District A and District E seats are up this fall. They are currently held by Kenny Teitler and Kathryn Kuhlenberg, who are both nearing the end of their terms but have not announced whether they will seek reelection.

Tamara Nimmo and Elizabeth Cockrill Taylor are the first to apply. Nimmo is seeking the District A seat, and Taylor has applied for the District E seat.

Designated Election Official Jonathan Landon said the applications are not yet official. Each must go through a verification process before nomination petitions are issued. Candidates then must file a notice of intent and collect at least 50 signatures from eligible electors to qualify.

District A includes southern Carbondale and the lower Mount Sopris area, while District E covers Missouri Heights and areas north of Colorado Highway 82. Maps of the boundaries, including an interactive address tool, are available at rfschools.com.

To be eligible, candidates must be registered electors of the district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election and live within the district they seek to represent. State law bars individuals from serving as school directors if they have been convicted of a sexual offense against a child.

As of Thursday, Aug. 21, neither Nimmo’s nor Taylor’s application had been verified.

Completed petitions must be submitted in person to Landon no later than 3:30 p.m., August 29, at the Roaring Fork School District office, 400 Sopris Ave., Carbondale. Petitions may be obtained by contacting Landon via email at jlandon@rfschools.com or (970) 384-6009. Spanish speakers can contact Cristina Vargas at cvargas@rfschools.com or (970) 384-6026.
