Roaring Fork School District to hold candidate forum for upcoming election
The Roaring Fork School District will host a candidate forum for the two open school board seats up for election in November, the district announced Monday in a news release.
The forum, co-hosted by the district and the Roaring Fork Community Education Association, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Carbondale District Office, ahead of the Nov. 4 election.
Two directors will be elected to four-year terms representing Districts A and E. Incumbent District E representative Kathryn Kuhlenberg is seeking a second term, challenged by Elizabeth Taylor.
The current District A representative, Kenny Teitler, announced in August he will not seek re-election. Voters will choose between Tamara Nimmo and Jodi Barr to fill the seat.
District A covers southern Carbondale and the lower Mount Sopris area, while District E includes Missouri Heights and areas north of Colorado Highway 82. Maps of the boundaries, including an interactive address tool, are available at rfschools.com.
“Over the past two months, we have been focusing on appropriately supporting prospective candidates through the candidate petition and certification process,” RFSD designated election official Jonathan Landon said in the release. “Now the community will have an opportunity to meet and hear directly from our four candidates as to why they are pursuing a board director role, and hear them answer a few questions to convey how they intend to approach this important opportunity.”
The Roaring Fork School District uses an at-large election system, meaning voters across district boundaries can cast ballots for each director seat regardless of where they live.
“What makes a candidate forum vital for teachers, students, families and administrators is that it offers all concerned stakeholders a chance to meet and hear from those candidates who will help steer the future of the district,” Roaring Fork Community Education Association President Charles DeFord said in the release. “Certainly candidates can convey their values and vision for our district through other avenues, but it is unique in that it offers all candidates an opportunity to directly address the challenges and issues our educators and students feel are most pressing.”
“We look forward to partnering with the Roaring Fork Community Education Association to provide this opportunity for voters to get to know school board candidates,” RFSD Superintendent Anna Cole said in the release. “The board’s role is to establish and implement a vision for the district and for desired student learning outcomes; it is important our community understands candidates’ positions, interests and goals.”
More information about the candidates, including official notices of intent to be a school board candidate, is available at rfschools.com.
