Year in Review: Sunlight Mountain replaces historic lifts with largest investment in resort’s history

2025 marked a year of significant change for Sunlight Mountain and those who frequent the slopes of the beloved local resort.
After years of preparation, the resort completed its long-anticipated lift project ahead of the 2025-26 ski season, officially retiring the decades-old Primo and Segundo chair lifts in the largest capital project in Sunlight’s history.
Although the project was first announced several years ago, Sunlight was not able to complete the double lift replacement until this summer.
The fixed-grip double chair Primo lift, which operated as the main route to Sunlight’s peak, was replaced with a brand new Loma quad lift built by Leitner-Poma in Grand Junction. The quad lift promises to keep lift lines short and ensure skiers and snowboarders are spending time where they belong — on the slopes.
The historic Segundo lift was replaced with a triple chair lift featuring modern safety upgrades like a restraint bar and footrests for smoother, safer rides up the mountain. Segundo was the oldest operational lift in Colorado — it carried skiers to the west side of Sunlight since 1973, and previously served visitors in Aspen from 1954 to 1969.
Both lifts were removed and replaced over the summer in an impressive construction effort. Chairs from the old lifts were divvied out through multiple avenues including donations, a drawing and a silent and live auction.
While the new lifts usher in a new era for Sunlight, the resort chose to honor its history by keeping their original names — Primo and Segundo.
