Garfield County Libraries schedule for June 9-16

Garfield County libraries are rolling out new summer programming this month with events focused on internet safety, life after age 70 and hands-on STEM challenges for kids.

Kyle McElroy, chief investigator for the 9th Judicial District, will lead a bilingual internet safety workshop from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 9, at the Rifle Branch Library. The session will cover how to prevent online abuse, recognize warning signs, report concerns and find support when safety is at risk for you or someone you know. The event is free. For more information, call the Rifle library at 970-625-3471.

A new community program called “Life After 70” offers space for older adults to explore aging in an open, supportive environment. Participants are invited to share experiences, discuss challenges and suggest guest speakers for future sessions. There is no set curriculum—just meaningful conversation on topics that matter. The first event is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Carbondale Branch Library and will continue on the second Saturday of each month. Call 970-963-2889 for more details.

While the Summer Reading Challenge is already underway, kids can also take part in Challenge Island, a team-based STEM experience. Participants will design and build a bridge using only the supplies provided in a “treasure chest,” working together like real engineers.

Challenge Island events take place at the following times and locations:

  • 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library
  • 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Carbondale Branch Library
  • 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the New Castle Branch Library
