Robert (Bob) Gould passed away early May 10th at the age of 87. Bob was born and raised in Carbondale, CO, the first of five children born to Archie & Lucy Gould. He attended Carbondale schools, graduating from Carbondale Union High School in 1956. Following graduation, he attended Mesa College. In 1957, he began working for Mid Continent, then for Morrison Knudsen driving hill truck. As Morrison Knudsen’s fleet increased, Bob was one of the truckers sent by train to Salt Lake City to pick up new trucks and transport them back to Redstone. Later he drove river truck until 1966.
Bob married Sally Holgate on August 23, 1958, in Carbondale. Three children were born to their union. In the fall of 1966 Bob was offered an opportunity to join State Farm. Bob and Sally moved their family to Aurora, where Bob opened his agency. He was an agent for over 35 years, retiring in 2002. Bob spent time enjoying skiing, hunting, (especially bird hunting), fishing, archery, golfing, and racquet ball. In his quiet time, Bob found a love for carving. In the beginning he carved mostly game birds but soon included songbirds to his collection. The Denver area provided an opportunity to enjoy all the sports Bob loved growing up. He was a devoted fan and held season tickets to the Rockies, watching the Broncos, Avalanche and Nuggets whenever possible.
Bob missed living in the mountains. In 2007 he decided to make his home in Buena Vista. He loved the Collegiate Peaks. Mt. Princeton was his favorite and it greeted him each morning out his living room window. It reminded him of being near Mt. Sopris when he was young. Mt. Princeton was his weather gauge, and he checked it each day as he had coffee on the front porch. Bob enjoyed his church family in Buena Vista and attended church faithfully. He spent many afternoons exploring mountain scenery, wildlife, Cottonwood Pass, and Cottonwood Lake. He spent afternoons searching for elk herds and walked many miles along the Arkansas River. He and his family spent each year enjoying an annual family camping trip near Gould, CO.
Bob was proceeded in death by Sally, his parents, and his sons Robert (Rob) Gould & Paul Gould. He is survived by his daughter Kelly Gould, her husband Tim Dick, grandchildren, Justin (Alex) Allen, Ryan Allen, Paige (Phil) Porras, Blaise (Robin) Jaros, Larissa Gould, Emily Gould, Jordan McKinney and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Art (Ruth) Gould, Mike Gould and his sisters Hallie (Terry) Gore and Ruth (Ed) Vetter along with many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
He will be lovingly missed. His family will scatter his ashes at Grand Lake near the family’s favorite camping area.
