One lane of the County Road 108, also known as Thompson Creek Road, bridge near Carbondale has been temporarily reopened to alternating traffic while Garfield County assesses its plan for emergency repairs, according to a Wednesday news release.

Garfield County road and bridge staff and stop lights will direct the alternating traffic, which is limited to less than 54,000 pounds, the release states. Oversized or commercial semitrucks are currently not allowed on the bridge. The pedestrian bridge is open.

After several weeks of one-lane traffic due to a large pothole, the bridge was fully closed Monday. Asphalt was removed from a section of the bridge, exposing corrosion and eroded welds on the metal decking that was causing the bridge to bounce, according to the release.

The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners approved a $131,650 capital supplement from the road and bridge fund and a contract with Con-Sy Inc. for the project last week

“Our top priority is the safety of the community,” Scott Marsh, Garfield County road and bridge director, said in the release. “We are also expediting repairs to get the road back open as quickly as possible for public use.”

Commuters should look for message boards located on State Highway 133 in Carbondale, along county roads 108 and 109, and at the intersection of Dry Park and Four Mile roads for updates.
