Pitkin County likely to support Cavern Springs mobile home park purchase

Jaymin Kanzer/Post Independent
An emergency resolution passed unanimously on Wednesday, allowing the Chair of the Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners, Jeffrey Woodruff, to sign a letter of intent to support the residents of the Cavern Springs mobile home park with $1.5 million to purchase the mobile home park.
The Cavern Springs mobile home park has been up for sale to new landowners who could increase the residents’ rent, spurring a movement for residents to fundraise to purchase the entire park. Currently, the movement is looking for between $23-25 million, according to April Long, the executive director of the West Mountain Regional Housing Coalition.
According to Long, a recent donation from the Colorado Health Foundation brought the total donations to around $11.5 million, and Pitkin County’s possible donation could bring that to around $13 million.
“I want to thank everybody for another job extremely well done,” Commissioner Patti Clapper said. “We’re seeing the value in preserving local home parks.”
Currently, the letter is non-binding and only expresses a desire to support the resident’s cause. Woodruff expressed that he would also like to congratulate the work of other valley governments and nonprofits and that he would like to thank the West Mountain Regional Housing Coalition.
