Garfield County Libraries schedule for May 5-11

The Garfield County Libraries have several events planned for the coming days, including educational programs, community engagement opportunities and a call for award nominations.

The Garfield County Libraries are seeking nominations for their third annual Lisa Detweiler Service Award. Nominate a non-profit employee,volunteer or  first-responder who demonstrates extraordinary service to the local Garfield County community. Nominees can be of any age or background, but must be a resident of Garfield County. Nominations are due by July 31. Visit gcpld.org/lisa for more information or to submit a nomination. 

Teens ages 10–14 are invited to join The Dragon Lair: RPG & CCG Club at the Rifle Branch Library from 1–4 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. The club is for fans of strategy-based games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh. Participants are welcome to bring their own cards or use the library’s collection. Learn the ancient system of flowing movements, Tai Chi, as it can help increase mobility, flexibility, strength and balance. The Carbondale Branch Library will be holding a four part series at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in May where participants will learn the basic movements and postures of Tai Chi, how to move the body into alignment without stress and how to cultivate chi, the breath energy. The Glenwood Springs Historical Society is collaborating with the Garfield County Libraries and welcomes Ashton Durrett to share his family’s story of immigrating from Italy. The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library. For more information, call the Glenwood Springs Branch Library at 970-945-5958.

The Parachute Branch Library is holding an off-site event for a Mother’s Day Cake Decorating Class. Each family gets a cake to decorate with frosting, sprinkles and more. An instructor will show you how. Extra cakes are available for purchase. Supplies are limited and registration is required. To register, call the Parachute Branch Library at 970-285-9870. The event will take place 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at the Historical Society Schoolhouse at 7235 County Road 300 in Battlement Mesa.
